The cascade
Recycling is not one thing. It is an order of things.
Grinding wood is the end of the line for a pallet, so recyclers usually try the higher-value outcomes first. Every stage above the grinder is a stage where a board keeps doing the job it was milled for.

Reuse
Inspected, sorted and stacked for another trip. If a pallet is sound, it usually needs nothing more.

Repair
A damaged board or stringer is replaced, often with recovered lumber, and the pallet goes back into service.

Harvest
When the frame is beyond saving, the lumber may not be. Boards are stripped, de-nailed and kept as repair stock.

Remanufacture
Recovered components are rebuilt into another footprint. This is one reason odd sizes can stay practical.

Fiber
Wood that cannot be reused may be ground and screened for products such as mulch, animal bedding or fuel.

Disposal
Contaminated units and non-wood debris have to go somewhere else. Ask a supplier how they handle them.

Every footprint, drawn to true scale
Pallet size charts are tables of numbers that nobody can picture. The Board Atlas draws the footprint in your browser, ghosts a 48×40 GMA underneath it for comparison, and shows the stringers, the notches and a fork tine at the same scale. Switch to millimeters if that is the language your drawing speaks.

The greenest pallet is often the one already in service.
Reusing a pallet avoids building a new one. That is the plain case for keeping sound wood moving, and it does not need bigger claims than that.
When you ask for a quote, say what the pallet has to do. A lower grade may do the job, a repair may be enough, and sometimes a new build really is the right answer. Partner suppliers can only suggest those options if they know the application.
