Why automotive uses its own footprint

Automotive logistics is built around returnable containers rather than pallets. Plastic totes, collapsible bulk containers and steel dunnage racks are the primary unit, and the pallet is a base that those containers sit on. The 48 × 45 dimension comes from container module geometry, not from trailer width — which is why it looks arbitrary from the outside and is completely rational from the inside.

Recovered supply of 48 × 45 is thin nationally — it was 3.4% of our intake and almost all of it came from the Detroit and Bowling Green lanes. We remanufacture it on a fixed jig from recovered 48-inch stringers, which is why it prices at a modest premium over standard rather than as a milled short run.

Common questions

Why is the automotive pallet 48x45 and not 48x40?
Because the unit being carried is a returnable container sized to part geometry, not a case of consumer goods sized to a retail shelf. The pallet follows the container.
Can I substitute a 48x40?
Sometimes, if your containers fit within the smaller footprint. If they overhang, you lose roughly 30% of stacking strength and risk damage to the container edges, which are themselves expensive returnable assets.
Do you supply automotive-grade recycled pallets?
Yes, through a dedicated line with shiner inspection, height sorting and lot documentation. Tell us the plant requirement at quote time.
Is 48x45 available heat treated?
Yes, for export lanes. Automotive export to Mexico is generally exempt under current arrangements, but verify against the specific destination requirement.
